PD stands for “pupillary distance” and it is the distance between the center of both pupil. This distance is required to make the prescription glasses as it gives the idea to the manufacturer of the glasses that where the optical center of each lens should be fixed.

If the PD is incorrect you cannot focus your eyes properly. Usually, eye specialists don’t provide the PD to the customer but they have to provide it to the optician who has to make the glasses.   

Eye doctors usually know that the customer asks for the PD to buy eyeglasses online to save money from the optical retailers. Doctors who have a close relationship with the optical retailers are hesitant to give PD to their customers as it’s not good for the business of local optician.

Importance of PD for Prescription  

The accurate PD measurement of your pupils guarantees the correct centration of your prescription lenses. 

The average measurement is from 60mm to 66mm. You can also provide the average PD while buying the eyeglasses online but it is recommended to get an accurate PD if you fall outside of the typical average.

The best approach is not to take a risk and get your accurate PD measurement. Having a strong prescription makes the measurement of your PD important to the lens centration as well. 

If the PD is incorrect, you cannot have clear visibility with the glasses and you’ll feel that your one eye is pulled away from the optical center on the lens.  

How to Get PD Measurement   

To get the accurate PD measurement for your eyes, ask your optician to provide you the measurement details. 

If you can’t get the information from optician you can do measurement yourself. The most accurate way to do it is to use a ruler that is made specially to measure the PD. You can also watch online videos to get the measurement guidelines, so you can do it at home.
